- Kernel
- A set of VistA software routines that function as an intermediary between the host operating system and the VistA application packages such as Laboratory, Pharmacy, IFCAP, etc. The Kernel provides a standard and consistent user and programmer interface between application packages and the underlying M implementation.

- A set of software utilities. These utilities provide data processing support for the application packages developed within the VA. They are also tools used in configuring the local computer site to meet the particular needs of the hospital.
